Has the “heyday of ice delivery” passed?

In August 2021, the Dallas Morning News did a stellar article on ice delivery during the pre-freezer days. It’s hard to imagine now, but until the refrigerator was invented, people received their ice every day via delivery from the local iceman. And ice wasn’t used to just chill drinks. It was primarily used to preserve food. By 1948, thanks to the affordability of residential refrigerators and freezers, “the heyday of ice delivery companies had passed.”

We here at Seasons of Ice like to think these icemen (and icewomen) were before their time. To us, icemen were the predecessors to GrubHub, DoorDash, and other delivery services. What do you think? Has the heyday of ice delivery passed, or should Seasons of Ice reignite this past-time…
