Tipping our hat to the history of ice in Dallas
As you know, we are based in Dallas-area. Since we officially are launching this weekend, we wanted to highlight this throwback article written by the DMN. Until the 1880’s, Dallas had to get ice shipped from the north. Ice was stored in local ice houses and distributed to customers daily via wagons until around the 1950’s. The largest ice company in the city around that time was Dallas’ Southland Ice Co./Southland Corp.
Southland also started selling groceries out of Dallas ice houses. These ice houses were renovated into convenience stores called Tote’m Stores and were later renamed 7-Eleven. Reddy Ice, also headquartered in Dallas, was once a division of Southland Corp. and is the largest manufacturer of packaged ice in the United States.
While we love nostalgia, Seasons of Ice is very glad that we don’t have to distribute our ice by wagons!
